How to choose the best tour in Cairns

Choosing a Cairns Tour

Cairns is a starting point for several very different days. A reef cruise, a rainforest trip and a visit to Kuranda may all appear on the same list of “Cairns tours”, but they answer different wishes.

If the Great Barrier Reef is your priority, decide first how you want to experience the water. Do you want to snorkel, try an introductory dive, dive as an experienced diver or enjoy the scenery from a vessel? Ask how much time the trip spends at the reef, what guidance is available in the water and what options exist for a companion who does not want to swim. Tourism Tropical North Queensland explains the differences between snorkelling and diving choices.

For rainforest, look closely at the route. A Daintree day from Cairns involves considerably more travel than a local outing, so the stops and time at each one matter. A guided visit can add knowledge of the landscape and its culture; check whether that is genuinely part of the itinerary you are buying. Tours to the Daintree and Cape Tribulation depart from Cairns, while Kuranda offers a different kind of rainforest day.

Finally, plan around energy as well as price. Two ambitious full-day tours on consecutive days may leave little room to enjoy Cairns itself. Check departure points, transfers, cancellation terms and weather arrangements before booking.

Our view: If this is your first visit, choose the one experience you would most regret missing, then build the rest of your stay around it. Cairns rewards a little breathing room.
